About Adrian Tschan

I started my carrier in 2001 with an electrician apprenticeship where I gained valuable hands-on experience. Eager to see the world I decided to spend a year in New Zealand where I worked as an electrician and improved my English skills. Fascinated with power generation, variable frequency drives and automation systems I decided to study electrical engineering in New Zealand and Germany. Since 2010 I have been working for Siemens Naval & Commercial Vessels in Hamburg. I work with variable frequency drives consisting of a line transformer, a pulse with modulated SINAMICS S120 converter board and a synchronous- or asynchronous machine. Alongside the SINAMICS control unit a SIMATIC PLC and touch panel is used. The system can be operated as a: line droop controlled generator supplying active- and reactive power to the mains, while being powered by the diesel propulsion engine running at variable speed torque controlled motor (booster) to support the diesel propulsion engine speed controlled motor to drive the propeller on its own I deal with all technical aspects right from the start of the project till the end of the warranty stage. This includes specifying the system, defining the test procedures for the classification authorities, supporting the ship yards with the installation, carrying out shop tests, on site commissioning including sea trials and providing full service support. I’m truly passionate about my job. I get to work at the office as well as on board of a vessel at shipyards, ports or at sea all over the world. Tight deadlines and no back office support at sea, means giving 200% while working around the clock under stressful conditions, which is extremely challenging but on the other hand also very rewarding.
