Background

About Adrion Dula

Central to the human experience is the use of language as a tool for communication and social interaction. As an instructor of languages, literatures, and cultures, I consider my classes as opportunities for my students to broaden their horizons and learn about other cultures through language. In my view, the principal role of teachers is to act as guides and mentors in order to 1) support and empower students as global citizens; 2) encourage students to think analytically and critically about their own as well as French and Francophone culture, literature, history, and language; and 3) interact with diverse language communities around the world. My main goal as an instructor is to create a learning environment where students better understand themselves while refining their language skills and global perspectives. I believe that learning is a process of discovery, facilitated through collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-reflection. I also believe that all language skills—reading, writing, listening, speaking and culture—are interconnected and that student learning is most effective when they are collaborating and engaging in multimodal and multimedia activities and projects that integrate multiple skills and literacies. Teaching Interests: French Language, Literature, Culture, Film; Early Modern Society and Popular Culture; Translation and Business French; Fairy Tales; French Children's Literature. Research Interests: Literary Fairy Tales, Contemporary Multimedia Adaptations of Literary Fairy Tales, Woman Writers, Early Modern Writers, Disability Studies, Feminism and Gender Studies, and Post-Colonialism; Teaching with Technology Selection of Recent Conference Presentations: 2021 “When Clouds Sing: Gender, Class, and Anthropomorphism in George Sand’s ‘Le Nuage rose’” American Folklore Society, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (Upcoming) 2018 “Julie Delafaye-Bréhier: A Lost Successor of Perrault?” American Folklore Society-Hyatt, Buffalo, New York 2016 “Transitioning from Traditional Compositions to Digital Narrations” Midwest Association for Language Learning Technology-University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 2016 "Into the Woods: Locating Wonder in Fantastic Tales by Julie Delafaye-Bréhier and Marceline Desbordes-Valmore" The International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts Conference, Orlando Airport, Orlando, Florida 2015 "Pronunciation Teaching using Automatic Speech Recognition" FLEAT VI (Foreign Language Education and Technology) Conference, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts
