About Aiden Plant

A passionate, hardworking and dedicated Consultant Medical Microbiologist, leading an NHS diagnostic laboratory and general hospital in the diagnosis, management and control of infection, for a population of over individuals, with more than 500 inpatient beds. Strengths include effective communication skills whilst under pressure, the ability to work self-directedly individually and within a team, an eager initiative, and excellent problem-solving abilities, with a proven passion of delivering the best possible healthcare as a patient-facing clinician. Exposure to infection control and public health include experience in the management of outbreaks of syphilis, scarlet fever, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MRSA, hepatitis B virus, and Mycobacterium chimaera. Understanding personal limitations is key; the importance of working with knowledgeable colleagues is never overlooked - asking for opinions and support is not considered a weakness - but offers only the best patient care. Attention to evidence-based practice is a key strength - with constant appraisal of emerging evidence - and cutting-edge changes to practice in line with best practice. Current interests include antimicrobial development and stewardship, diagnostic stewardship, evidence-based medicine, infections of the immunosuppressed, education (including being a junior doctor educational supervisor) and community engagement. Future short-term goals include developing Trust-wide antibiotic educational resources and formulary, as well as increasing community infection exposure to reduce hospital admission, whilst increasing strategic and managerial responsibilities leading to an MBA would be in the long-term.
