On Leadership “What distinguishes leaders from peers, managers, followers, and fence-sitters is their willingness to accept a leadership challenge. Such decision is sometimes a painful process. It entails sacrifices for themselves and their loved ones. More importantly, it requires a sufficient dose of self-awareness, which is the first competency that leaders must possess. Without a sense of sacrifice and a good amount of self-awareness, those who take on a leadership challenge will likely make the situation worse, demotivate high performers, alienate stakeholders, and cause damage to an organization, institution or movement and everything that it holds dear. The sad part is that they are unaware about what they have done. Yes, one can be a good person, but a poor leader at the same time. So how does one become a leader?
