About Alan Fairlamb
I am co-founder of the Drug Discovry Unit, University of Dundee. I have extensive experience in the discovery and development of new drug treatments for neglected tropical diseases. I have published over 300 publications on discovery, validation and molecular characterization of potential drug targets; modes of drug action and mechanisms of drug resistance in African trypanosomiasis, Chagas' disease, leishmaniasis, malaria and helminth infections. My specialities include: biochemistry, enzymology and molecular biology of protozoan parasites and disease models. Intermediary metabolism, particuarly thiol, polyamine, folate, pterin and purine / pyrimidine metabolism. Currently, I serve as an advisor and trustee for the Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation (since 2010). Previously I have served on numerous WHO/TDR committees (from 1987-2005) and STAC (2006-2011), DNDi Scientific Advisory Committee (2003-2010) as well as UK MRC, MRC Developmental pathway Funding Scheme, the Wellcome Trust and Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
