57 years experience, as Master, O.O.W, in LNG, crude-oil, and product tankers, Ro-Ro's, Reefers, break-bulk ships, and offshore operations. Captain of Anchor-Handling tugs for 7 years, N.S, Newfoundland and Labrador. Towed icebergs away from oil rigs. Towed blazing trawler "Daishin Maru 16" out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Minister of Transport's Commendation for the rescue/salvage of the bulk-carrier "Euro Princess", off Sable Island in Force 11 Storm, 1981.(See photo above). Re-delivered "Euro Princess" to Underwriters under Lloyd's Open Form of Salvage Agreement. 1986 commanded "Balder Husum": successfully towed two AHTS tugs from Nova Scotia to Scotland. 1986-88 Instructor, Nova Scotia Nautical School. 1988-89 Container Superintendent with Hapag-Lloyd, loading/discharging container ships, and running a fleet of 40 refrigerated trucks. 33 years as Flag State Inspector/Port State Control Inspector/I.S.M. Lead Auditor. with over inspections. In 2003, Alan inspected the bulk carrier "Essco Spirit" in Halifax, which revealed serious safety violations, and extremely serious negligence by the Classification Society, which was an IACS member!"Essco Spirit" was detained for four months. Halifax PSC prevented the loss of 17 lives, an environmental disaster, and the loss of a multi-million dollar graincargo. In 2012, Alan and his colleagues detained the tug "Craig Trans". The certificates had expired. Crew wages not paid. The bilges held 30K litres of oil; Life-Rafts not serviced for 10 years! Only one Generator worked. The only tow-wire was worn, kinked, and rusty. The tug had intended to tow a derelict bulk-carrier during the North Atlantic winter! I.S.M Lead Auditor, Accident Investigator, and Pollution Prevention Officer. Former member of the Canadian Board of Steamship Inspection. President of the Master Mariners of Canada during the reform of the Canada Shipping Act 2001. Organizer of the "Safer Ships-Competent Crews" conferences. Instructor, International Maritime Academy, Trieste, Italy. Instructor, Port Operations, U.N. Trainmar, Paramaribo, Suriname.
