About Alan McKee

As Head of School of Art, Communication and English at the University of Sydney I lead over 120 ongoing academic, over 40 professional staff, and almost 500 casual appointments each year. I have been an academic leader for over ten years, and in those roles I have demonstrated my commitment to developing distributed leadership in academic contexts. I am an authentic leader who builds collegiate and positive academic communities. I secure high quality outcomes in teaching, research and engagement, while paying attention to staff workloads, promoting diversity and supporting a work-life balance for my staff. As a curriculum designer I have a track record of building interdisciplinary, inter-Faculty, outward-facing curricula with strong Work-Integrated Learning components. As a researcher I continue to have an outstanding record of accomplishment, including winning and managing research funding, from funders including the Australian Research Council, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Wellcome and the Queensland Government. My research for over twenty years has been focused on gender, sexuality and media, and how digital media and entertainment influences the perception and self-image of individuals.
