About Alan Sutherland

A highly qualified and motivated mathematics lecturer with extensive teaching experience in secondary, further and tertiary education. I have worked with UK and international students in a schools, colleges and university for 12 years and have developed specific skills helping international students integrate into the UK higher education system and social environment. My portfolio career began in industry as a professional engineering product manager combining extensive technical knowledge with project and team management experience. Simultaneously achieving an MBA ignited my entrepreneurial skills and I set up and ran a successful educational business. I am versatile with demonstrable teaching, administration and interpersonal skills. I consider myself to be focussed and committed, with proven administrative skills, marketing and organisational work experience. Commended for my teaching and communication skills I have been successful in managing change and collaborating with others. Since the inception of the Covid crisis all of my teaching has been on-line. I have significant technical and IT skills which has allowed me to easily change to a virtual learning environment. Experience gained enabled me over this summer to work with the Learning Development Centre at GCU to create and deliver an on-line module in applied maths for students from non-traditional backgrounds to facilitate their access to university education. I have given significant contribution to curriculum development on Pathway Programmes (SCQF levels 6 – 8) for Business, Computing, Engineering and Science and lead a review of the mathematics content in other academic modules. A fully engaged, holistic teacher of mathematics, my considerable IT skills have allowed me to embrace the digital learning environment offering versatile delivery, student support and assessment.
