About Alan Ward

I am a data scientist with a background in scientific research and education. As both a researcher and a teacher, data were key to answering real world problems and to generate insights that would inform and refine my teaching to ensure my practice had the most impact to students. As an innately curious individual I am excited by the opportunity to apply my skills and knowledge to new scenarios and to deepen my understanding of programming and statistics. In addition, I am confident in my ability to leverage my background in teaching to effectively communicate the insights generated using data to effect change. I have a love of learning and have near endless curiosity in the world around me. I have a wide variety of hobbies including gardening, woodwork and carving, endurance cycling, climbing, hiking, mountaineering, fishing, and cooking. Learning new skills, techniques, and tools is one of my greatest pleasures in life, be it teaching myself new woodworking techniques, how to express code in a more elegant manner, or bicycle mechanics; I love unbolting things, taking them apart piece by piece, and learning how they work. For this reason I am attracted to multidisciplinary fields of enquiry, for instance when I got the opportunity to apply the analytical skills I gained during my MSc studies to an educational research context during my PGCE.
