One can browse or read the thousands of project management literature available but nothing teaches better than experience. Only through personal immersion in different project endeavor will you learn the intricacies, practicalities and technicalities revolving around each challenge. I am a firm believer that one cannot manage unless he/she gets his/her hands dirty. It is neither degrading nor demeaning to do the work yourself if only to learn first - hand. It is the only way to articulately bring your ideas to the table with confidence. Leadership by example - I live by and with this style because there is no better way to demonstrate and allow your colleagues to understand than by doing things the way you were educated and exposed to. Having more than 2 decades of industry experience in the field of business development, design, estimate, operations, project management, systems integration and technical support, I am simply thankful for my mentors and superiors who have given me the opportunities to experience different challenges and scenarios that have given me a deeper insight on how to approach these, and their variations, over the years. Stay low but be comprehensive. While others put premium to impress, it will be worthwhile to be able to express your ideas clearly without the intricacies, as most would not be interested in these anyway, but with a clear path towards problem solving.
