Background
About Albert Gan
SQL, Java, Linux/Bash, Web, Servers- Code should be easy to read, as we read way more than we write codes- Code executions should be easy to monitor as we need to audit / trace / debug / tune way more than we read codes- Over-engineering is when one spends more time on the technologies rather than implementing business rules- The only problem with automated-testing is programmers having to write it- Both tested code and QA enable future refactoring and change- Making oneself obselete by means of delegation enables more time on other opportunities and self-improvements- Rather than the impossibility in making things right the 1st time, I prefer QA + being open for errors, but with the technological capacity to quickly be informed on any errors, determine the source of error, fix and deploy the fixes to production- One should be happy facing bugs with error stacktraces, and should fear those without- The challenge is for the software to adapt to business changes which could be quick and abrupt in nature, especially when it's run with informed decision makings- Stay in the trench, keep making mistakes, keep fixing in a way that prevent future occurences- It's all about data, how to scale storing and retrieving informations out of it- Another way to scale your server, aside from vertical and horizontal scaling, and often overlooked, is to avoid too having too many requests hitting your server in the 1st place- People that are constantly frustrated, constantly identifying problems, causes and options of solutions - these are the best people to work with- Should have a work life balance, and yet i find myself keep thinking about work in non-working hours- 80% is for sharping the axe before cutting down the tree. 20% is the actual grind that feels like another 80% that one needs to see through till the end to really produce something- Never start building reusable software components from DSLs. Always start from reusable small pieces that can be re-arranged and recombined easily until it organically grows into smaller DSLs.
