Al Gilbert is President and CEO of Felton Institute, the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest outpatient mental health provider, serving over clients annually, across five counties; San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Monterey, and Marin. Al began his career with Felton in 2002 serving as an outside consultant. He was hired internally as CFO in 2004, became COO in 2011, and took over as CEO in 2014. Over his 20-year career at Felton, he has made significant improvements in the organization’s operating model and fiscal infrastructure, grown a diverse leadership team, as well as negotiated over $20 million in new grants and contributions while realizing a changing strategic vision for the organization. He has also been a major architect of a new behavioral health service model and helped to grow the organization from a budget of $7 million to over $40 million. His core responsibilities include running a 5-county community-based organization with a workforce of over 600 professionals. Al also serves as the CEO of CIRCE Software, Inc, a for-profit social enterprise, wholly owned by Felton Institute, created in 2011, with a mission to provide human service nonprofits affordable, cutting-edge, cloud-based solutions that help them better manage their businesses. Prior to joining Felton, Al has served in numerous key leadership positions including, CFO (SongPro.com, Inc; Oakland Healthy Start), COO (Colossal Graphics), and was a founder and managing partner of Entrepen, a business consultancy focused on fiscal and operational management, strategic planning, crisis management, auditing, and systems re-engineering. Al became a member of the Board of Directors for TODCO Impact Development Corp, in 2002, and currently serves as Treasurer and Secretary. Passionate about giving back to his community at large, he has also served on the boards of Nature Bridge Golden Gate, the Mental Health Contractors Association of San Francisco, Kiwanis International, and Town School for Boys to name a few. Al balances for profit business and financial advising, strategy, and governance, with the non-profit sector where he has worked extensively and is passionate about creating lasting change from the ground up for individuals most in need of support services, compassion, equity, and care. A natural leader, teacher, and innovator, Al is a national and international speaker in the areas of high-performance financial management, nonprofit accounting, and behavioral health program design.
