Background
About Alberto Costi
Alberto Costi is a Professor of Law at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and a co-Director of the New Zealand Centre of International Economic Law. He has published widely on canonical topics such as the history and sources of international law, international environmental law, including environmental justice and climate change, use of force as well as on topics in the subfields of international criminal law, the law of armed conflict and human rights. He has published over eighty books, book chapters and journal articles, spoken at numerous international conferences, commented in the media and before parliamentary committees in these areas. He has also advised governments and other bodies in various areas of international law. Recent publications include: the editorship of the first ever textbook on international law through a New Zealand lens, Public International Law: A New Zealand Perspective (LexisNexis, 2020)(in which I have authored and co-authored seven chapters); and, In the Eye of the Storm – Reflections from the Second Pacific Climate Change Conference (Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and New Zealand Association for Comparative Law, 2020)(with James Renwick). He currently works on a monograph (funded by the New Zealand Law Foundation) examining whether the rise in sea level and related climate change events may impose obligations on neighbouring states to assist “disappearing” nations in retaining rights and duties at international law, and ensuring the protection of their populations, including climate mobility. Alberto is the Secretary-General of the International Law Association New Zealand Branch, the President of the New Zealand Association for Comparative Law, and one of the co-directors of the New Zealand Centre of International Economic Law. He sits on various committees of scientific associations in New Zealand and overseas, including the World Commission on Environmental Law of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Australasian Law Academics Association, the New Zealand International Humanitarian Law Committee, and the International Association of Comparative Law. Alberto serves on the editorial board of twelve journals, including the Asia-Pacific Journal of International Humanitarian Law and the Revue Québécoise de Droit International. He is currently the managing editor of the New Zealand Journal of Public and International Law as well as the Yearbook of the New Zealand Association for Comparative Law.
