Background

About Alex Alvarez

I’m an anthropologist specializing in indigenous resource management, governance, development, landscape, and property rights. I hold a PhD in development studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland; a master’s degree in social sciences in environmental management and development from FLACSO. Along with my professional research experience, I have knowledge of the realities of indigenous peoples of the highlands and lowlands in Peru and of the challenges of cultural diversity in a globalized world. I have written several specialized articles for science publications abroad about Andean and Amazonian indigenous peoples, land governance, conservation, and protected areas in indigenous territory in Peru. I also give diverse lectures about Peruvian indigenous peoples and global change in Peru, and in other countries in South America and Europe. I received doctoral fellowships at the National Centre of Competence in North-South Research in Geneva and the Russell E. Train Education for Nature program with the World Wildlife Fund. I also received the Exchange Legacy Lelong grant for social anthropology research from the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) in France. Additionally, I have been a reviewer for various Latin American journals, including Boletin del Instituto Francés de Estudios Andinos, Journal Gestión y Ambiente, and Journal Anthropologica, focusing on indigenous peoples and environmental issues and reviewer invited of Undergraduate Research Scholarships for Auvil Felowship Committee 2017, Washington State University. Since 2012, I'm Academic Director of SIT Study Abroad and Program Director of DukeEngage Peru of Duke University. In July of 2017, I was nominated an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium- Indigenous and Conserved Communities Area, promoting the appropriate recognition of, and support to, the territories and areas conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities.
