My name is Alex England. In my career, I’ve had two jobs that taught me a lot about “professionalism.” People tell me professionalism is missing in a lot of our workforce today. Professionalism is a powerful quality. It helps us to carry out our jobs to the best of our ability, to impress and inspire others, and it provides a deep sense of satisfaction and self-worth. It is something for which we can all strive. It’s how you do your work—not what you do! It means achieving high standards in both front office and back office no matter your role or profession. There are eight core characteristics of professionalism—competence, knowledge, conscientiousness, integrity, respect, emotional intelligence, appropriateness, and confidence. If you strengthen these attributes, you can become confident to act professionally wherever you work. How do we improve in the eight characteristics of professionalism? Start with identifying your own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and then set goals to improve. Increase your knowledge! Commit to building expertise and stay current with your industry through research, training, networking, and developing detailed and relevant knowledge. Be conscientious—make a to-do list, act, improve your concentration, and complete your work more efficiently and accurately. As an Apple Senior Support Advisor, I understood the importance of professionalism. It helped me achieve high-quality results! I also understood the importance of professionalism while serving in Military Intelligence for the US Army. Principles of military professionalism include discipline, commitment, skills, excellence, selfless service, and honor. Military professionalism helps members accomplish their mission, overcomes challenging situations, helps guide individuals when they might not know how to act, and promotes a positive image of individuals and their service branches.
