About Alex Gaut

My background includes many years working in coastal and marine conservation. This includes work on a wide range of topics such as coastal development, marine citizen science, threatened species, introduced marine species, marine parks and fisheries. I have managed half million dollar, award-winning projects, led a team of up to 8 people, negotiated and managed contracts, been an Acting CEO, and been invited to be on, and managed multiple committees. I have worked in non-profits, state government, schools, and run my own business. I am passionate, ethical and practical. Words that others have used to describe me include inspiring, intelligent, brave and having integrity. I am attracted to the idea of servant leadership and like to think that I support my team to be their best. I am usually at my best when undertaking community engagement in all its forms, from leading nature tours, to delivering training. Unlike many, I enjoy public speaking and always get great feedback about my presentations. I have been a guest panelist, MC, workshop facilitator and guest lecturer, commented in the media, created educational and engagement tools and products, written policy submissions, managed events, sat on committees, participated and driven consultative processes, developed new programs, and developed a diverse range of stakeholder relationships. I have also taken an interest environmental psychology and nature connection - I figure if humans are part of the problem then they must also be part of the solution. So my driving interest in life now is how to help people connect with nature, both to start a connection, or to deepen a connection, and to break down some barriers so that anyone can connect. It can be done. So I work and study to help others do the same. It's positive, it's beautiful and it does change the world, one person at a time. I love this beautiful planet and I am happy to live in service to it as part of the Earth community.
