Background

About Alex Kutt

I have worked as an ecologist and conservation officer in both southern and northern Australia for over 25 years. I have worked for state (Victorian and Queensland) governments, the Australian Government (CSIRO), universities, and for small (Biosis) and large (GHD Pty Ltd) consulting firms. My working career has ranged from being a Research Assistant to a Team leader and Manager, and has involved working independently on projects, to managing and mentoring teams of technical staff and researchers, and supervising students. I have also undertaken voluntary and community work such as participation in Recovery Teams, Scientific Advisory Committees, and field naturalists groups such as the FNCV and the RGSQ. As a consultant I have worked with industry on wildlife ecology, assessment and monitoring programs and this has included the mining, water, and energy and transport infrastructure companies. I have worked extensively with community groups such as CMA’s and NRM groups, Indigenous ranger groups and NGOs such as the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and Bush Heritage. I have undertaken research and surveys in a diverse range of ecosystems including wet forests, wet tropical rainforests, temperate grasslands and woodlands, Mallee, tropical savannas and arid and semi-arid rangelands. My past and current research has investigated the local and landscape determinants of biodiversity pattern with emphasis on the link between species ecology, environmental change, land condition, weather patterns, climate change, fire and grazing, weeds and feral animals. This has included investigation into the standard methods, metrics and tools for biodiversity monitoring in rangelands. Much of this work has considered how this information can be used for natural resource managers and conservation planning, and the nexus between different land management strategies and the aspirations of pastoral, Indigenous and government land managers.
