About Alex Oneill

I am a lecturer at Appalachian State, focusing on Geography and GIS, as well as human-environment interactions. While completing my Bachelor's degree I acted in the role of Research Assistant on a project analyzing the impact of climate change on the snow/ice and water resources in the High Andes. I Graduated with my BS in Geography and GIS in the winter of 2018 and went straight into my Master's degree in Physical Geography and Climate Change at Appalachian, studying the developing risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) as the high mountains of the world begin to thaw. My research focused on the Khumbu region of Nepal. Since completing my Masters I have taken the role of Lecturer in the Geography and Planning Department at Appalachian State University, where I teach classes ranging from introductory earth sciences to GIS technology and techniques. I am also involved in several research projects, currently focusing on the use of UAV-based sensors for the remote sensing of top-bathymetric data in coastal and high-gradient streams. In early 2022 I started a GIS consulting firm, Daybreak GIS Consulting, LLC, as well as a small organic farm, Daybreak Homestead, with my partner.
