About Alex Ostapenko

Hi, I’m Alex! I am a data and image analysis specialist with an M.Sc. from the University of British Columbia, where I focused on programming (Python, R, SQL), machine learning (PyTorch), statistical modeling, and scientific visualization. My journey has taken me through a wide range of research and industry projects—from analyzing satellite debris re-entry and its impact on atmospheric pollution, to my current project on supporting emissions monitoring and fuel blending optimization in the energy sector at Validere. I’ve built virtual analyzers, developed secure data pipelines, and led client-facing dashboard development. While at the University of Toronto, I created a machine learning pipeline to predict photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in molecules, supporting the discovery of new OLED materials. In astrophysics, I developed custom Python tools for ALMA telescope data, designed and led a telescope observation project, processed large datasets using remote SSH clusters, and presented my work at scientific conferences. I’ve mentored undergraduate thesis students, contributed to light pollution policy, and enjoy bridging science with real-world impact. Let’s stay in touch!
