About Alex Rey

First and foremost, I am an artist.And the truth is, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t. Since I was a kid, an inexplicable peace washed over me whenever I picked up a pencil—a deep, cascading calm that hummed and flowed across the page. A gift that wasn’t mine to keep, but to share with the world.I wish I could say that same sense of purpose and ease followed me into school, but mostly, school just felt like an inconvenience. By fourth grade, I was better acquainted with detention than good grades. High school wasn’t much better—I spent more summers in summer school than by a pool or a beach, and I wasn’t entirely sure college would even make it onto the storyboard of my life.But there was this dream I held onto, big dreams to draw comics for giants like Marvel and DC—and when I finally went to college, something shifted. Maybe it was the air, maybe it was just time; all I knew was that suddenly, I found the clarity, focus, and hunger for learning that had eluded me for years, an energy that soon flowed into teaching. Soon enough, my passion for the arts collided with this newfound calling, leading me to where I am today—teaching middle and high school art.Major plot twist, I know.But as an artist, I began to see education as a canvas of its own—a space not just for imparting knowledge but also for shaping souls, a sacred arena where students are invited to discover, to create, to become, and it’s at the intersection of self-expression and critical thinking, skill-building and soul-building, where I challenge and empower students to find themselves and trust their creative vision to connect deeply with their community.
