About Alex Turner

I am a journalist, writer and editor based in Bristol. I specialise in social affairs and have reported extensively on housing and homelessness, children's and adults' social care and related topics such as mental health and domestic abuse. These interests have been informed by nearly a decade spent working in social housing and local government before I retrained as a journalist in 2010. I am passionate about reporting accessibly and engagingly on these areas, which have a huge impact on people's lives yet are often bound up in dry documents and complex jargon.My editorial work spans news, features, investigations, data-driven stories and podcasts. It is published in leading trade publications, especially Inside Housing and Community Care, in newspapers and magazines such as the Guardian and the Big Issue in the North, and in local titles including the groundbreaking Bristol Cable, a media cooperative with which I have a long involvement. My first journalism job was as a subeditor and for most of the last decade I have balanced my reporting with print and online editing jobs, with broad experience at special-interest consumer titles including TechRadar, BikeRadar, Mountain Biking UK, Edge and net magazine. As with my own writing, my aim as an editor is always to ensure that even the most niche or technical subjects are brought to life in a straightforward and – where appropriate – entertaining way.I have brought the same focus to a variety of projects for corporate clients, ranging from education providers and recruitment firms to cycling distributors. These have included researching and writing sector-specific insight reports, press releases and blog posts, as well as producing and editing in-house print publications.What you can expect from me:I apply the same high standards to all my jobs and love working across different topics and media, and with new people.
