About Alex Wreth

I am a deeply passionate and highly committed educator and administrator who strives to live and breathe the central tenets of the IB Programme, in particular the Learner Profile and International Mindedness. As a former international school student and part of a highly mobile family, I have always felt at home in the dynamic world of international school education and can strongly relate to students who may already have relocated several times in their young lives. I am genuinely interested in different cultures and enjoy the richness of dialogue that is produced when different ethnicities and their sensibilities come together and even occasionally clash. Whether as the founding Head of Senior Secondary School at Berlin Metropolitan School or as Head of English at the British School in Tokyo, I have always searched for new ways to instill in young learners intellectual curiosity and a passion for academic inquiry. My most successful moments as a teacher are when students no longer think of themselves as studying for examinations, but rather as participating in a process of inquiry and discovery, with excellent exam results almost a by-product. As a passionate educator, the most satisfying experience for me is always the one when young people step up and take responsibility for their own learning and, indeed, the direction of their lives. At graduation (at the very latest), teachers, administrators, career advisers and the entire school environment should have become obsolete for the graduating cohort. “Poor is the student who does not surpass his master.” (da Vinci)
