About Alexa Gauer

Hi there! I'm Alexa, and I’m all about people—whether that's through social work, teaching, or just being an active part of my community. I've been in the social work field for over a decade, and my journey has taken me from social service agencies to clinical practice, to education, and even into co-owning a small business with a stellar social work colleague. I have learned a lot along the way, but mostly that the best work, growth, or change happens when people feel genuinely connected and supported. What I Do: At the University of South Dakota, I get to work with amazing BSSW students as they embark on their social work journey. It’s such a joy to see them grow from curious learners into confident professionals. I love being part of their story. I’m also the Co-Owner and Clinician at Meridian Counseling & Family Services, LLC. Here, I focus on helping kids, young adults, and families navigate life’s challenges. I am a registered play therapist and use a client centered approach and evidenced based practice to meet needs. I’m here to offer support in a way that feels comfortable and approachable. I also help out with custody evaluations—always with the child’s best interest at heart. My Experience: I’ve worn a few hats over the years. Before my current roles, I provided therapeutic services and taught as an adjunct at Mount Marty University. I also worked as an Acute Psychiatric Social Worker and in Child Protection Services, which really helped me sharpen my crisis intervention and teamwork skills. Every role has taught me something new about how to connect with and support others. Community Involvement: Being part of my community is important to me. I’m on the Board of Directors for Southeast CASA and love getting involved in events and groups supporting local nonprofits or organizations supporting children and families. Continual Learning: I’m always eager to learn something new, especially when it helps me better serve my clients or students. I’ve received advanced training in Play Therapy, EMDR, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and I’m currently pursuing a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) at the University at Buffalo. At the end of the day, I’m here to connect, support, and make a positive impact.
