About Alexa Shapiro

I served with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps after graduating from college in 2014. The program had me serving on community service projects throughout the Western United States, helping to solve communities’ most pressing needs. Through this opportunity, I expanded my leadership experience by learning to adapt to constantly changing surroundings and I gained the ability to work in diverse environments. Before AmeriCorps, I worked as the Assistant Manager at Backyard Bowls. I developed environmental projects that aided in the Green Certification of the business and focused on expanding involvement in the community through service. This experience helped highlight my passion for service and environmentalism and my desire to incorporate these passions in my career. Recently, I worked in Duluth, Minnesota with the City of Duluth. I assisted in the coordination of volunteer events and led volunteer groups in projects focused on illegal dumping, playground beautification, trail maintenance, and invasive species. I am currently employed with the Winona area YMCA, where I assist with the development of after school programming and lead the middle school and high school activities. I hope to continue advancing my skills in planning and organization, as well as leading environmental stewardship projects, for a future career in environmental education and volunteer coordination/non-profit management. You'll notice a gap in employment on my profile from March 2017-November 2017. During this time I was backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,650 mile wilderness trail that starts at the Mexican border and ends in Canada. While not directly applicable to job experiences, the trail did emphasize my ability to stay committed to a project. I have a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara where I studied religion and globalization and am a certified SomaYoga instructor, 200 hr, from Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute in Duluth, MN.
