About Alexander Berger

Hi, I’m Alex! A highly motivated and passionate young researcher in the magic field of medicinal & synthetic organic chemistry. During my time as a PhD student in the Institute of Medicinal & Pharmaceutical Chemistry I successfully contributed to two early drug discovery projects, which are now two independent projects funded by the DFG and part of a graduate college. I have developed innovative flexible synthetic strategies for a natural and a synthetic lead structure to synthesize more than a hundred analogues for the investigation of their structure-activity relationships. Through the past years I have gained comprehensive expertise in the field of planning, optimization and experimental implementation of highly efficient and resource-saving synthetic strategies on a multigram scale. With my open-minded nature, methodical approach and structured work, I can contribute my strengths and experience to the benefit of the team. Both in a team and alone, I can make my contribution to successfully complete projects in the given time frame. As a result of the cooperation with various working groups in the field of Infection Research as well as Biological and Clinical Pharmacy, I was able to learn numerous aspects of preclinical drug discovery and have incorporated these findings into my repertoire. Additionally, I supervised organic chemistry and drug synthesis safety briefings, seminars and practical courses of pharmacy and industrial pharmacy students. I also made a decisive contribution to the switch to digital teaching in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic to maintain responsible supervision of the students. I’m continuously striving to improve myself, learn new methods and aspects and take on new challenges!
