About Alexander Blades

Alex is based in New York and is a partner at Paulson & Co. Inc, a private investment company that specializes in global event arbitrage, real estate, private equity, and credit strategies.Alex leads Paulson’s investments in European financial services with a focus on the turnaround of the Greek banking sector. He has been a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of Greece's largest bank, Piraeus Bank, since 2016, where he has worked side-by-side with management to achieve one of the world’s best bank transformations, as recognized by Euromoney Magazine, creating significant value for shareholders. He serves as a member of the strategy, risk, remuneration and nomination committees of Piraeus’ Board. He is the Vice Chairman of the Bank.Alex has more than a decade’s experience in addressing the supervisory requirements of the European Central Bank, and the policy objectives of governments in whose domain banks operate.Alex is also a non-executive director of Snappi, a start-up digital bank with a pan-European banking license issued by the European Central Bank.Alex has significant expertise in distressed, opportunistic and private credit investing, based on extensive buy-side, banking and legal services experience.Before joining Paulson & Co. Inc, Alex worked in the Leveraged Finance area at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York. Previously he was a finance lawyer at Skadden Arps in New York and at Mayer Brown in New York and Chicago.Alex is a 1997 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and a 1994 graduate of The Victoria University of Wellington. He was born and raised in New Zealand, where he began his professional career.
