About Alexander Cioffi
Previous research focused on treating diseases caused by protein ion transporter deficiencies. Given all the advantageous features that make small molecules excellent as therapeutics, we questioned whether small molecules might be able to autonomously replicate the function of mission protein ion transporters, thereby acting as a prosthesis on the molecular scale. Together with my colleagues, we were able to discover small molecules that restored physiology in protein ion transporter-deficient systems, including yeast, human cells, and animal models. Current research interests are focused on chemoproteomic-enabled covalent ligand approaches to discover new druggable hotspots for cancer therapy. In addition, we plan to proteosomally degrade undruggable targets via coupling chemoproteomics-enabled covalent ligand discovery with targeted protein degradation strategies.
