About Alexander Cotoia

Alexander Cotoia, Regulatory Compliance Manager at The Volkov Law Group P.C, has over eighteen years of experience in the legal and compliance professions. Alexander was employed as a senior paralegal with the firm of Holt Mynatt Martinez P.C. in Las Cruces, New Mexico for over a decade, where he worked on high-profile Section 1983 litigation, assisted with commercial transactions, and managed a considerable caseload of high-conflict cases implicating complex commercial and insurance coverage issues. In that capacity, Alexander was a direct report to now U.S. Magistrate Judge Damian L. Martinez of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. Alexander also served as the only lay member appointed to the State Bar of New Mexico Board of Editors for a two-year term that ended in December 2016. Alexander joined The Volkov Law Group in 2021, after a four year in-house tenure with suborbital space tourism company Virgin Galactic in a multifaceted legal and compliance role. Alexander regularly assists the firm’s clients with the resolution of trade compliance matters arising under both the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”). He also spearheads the firm’s third party due diligence efforts, and advises clients with respect to the applicability of domestic and international sanctions regimes, the remediation of corporate compliance programs, and the conduct of internal investigations. His current client base includes a broad swath of companies across economic sectors, including, but not limited to, aerospace and commercial spaceflight, semiconductor manufacturing, payment processing systems, medical equipment and device production, and energy provision. During his time at Volkov Law, Alexander has successfully represented a number of clients in the context of voluntary self-disclosures made to the U.S. Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (“DDTC”), the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (“BIS”), and the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”). Alexander holds a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Purdue University Global (née Kaplan University). He earned the Credential of Readiness from Harvard Business School in 2015 on a partial scholarship, and a master’s degree in law with a concentration in regulatory compliance from Regent University School of Law in 2019.
