About Alexander Knoll

Step by step, Dr. Alexander Knoll initiated and developed the methodology of complex system optimization, starting with a paper published in 1981 for optimizing nuclear power plants. Subsequently, Dr. Knoll expanded and applied the enhanced optimization methodology to other industries as well, including: design of a new aircraft, design of a new space system, fatigue rules for operators, emergency preparedness, finances, insurance, regulation, health care, cyber security, etc. Optimal Design was created by Dr. Alexander Knoll in 1996 and incorporated in Pennsylvania in the same year. Its objective is to partner with companies interested in optimizing their products in the best cost-competitive manner. A few examples follow, to highlight how the optimization methods of Dr. Knoll helped in various types of projects: 1. As a Risk Management Program Manager at nuclear power plants, Dr. Knoll achieved a very high productivity at reasonable low costs, under strict regulatory constraints. He also identified inadequate maintenance practices of turbine-generators and warned the nuclear industry about the issue. His warning was rejected… until the DC Cook turbine missile occurred; the cost of the repairs at DC Cook was over 800 million dollars. During the development of a new satellite communication system to control takeoff and landing of airplanes, Dr. Knoll identified a number of unacceptable high risk events. Dr. Knoll developed the methodology of Risk Informed Optimization of Regulation. The optimization methodology of regulation is required to achieve a safe and competitive industry in a global economy. During the development of fatigue rules for operators in high risk industries, Dr. Knoll came to the conclusion that nobody knows why we sleep. After a few years of research, he discovered the answer, which is currently proprietary information offered to pharmaceutical companies.
