About Alexander Sack

Professor Dr. Alexander Sack is an internationally renowned expert in transcranial brain stimulation, fundamental and applied cognitive neuroscience, and clinical brain research. Since 2011, he is appointed as Chair and Full Professor of Brain Stimulation and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience at the Faculty of Psychology & Neuroscience, Maastricht University and the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+). Sack is also founding director of the Academy of Brain Stimulation, a leading international institution to bridge the gap between scientific research and clinical practice in the field of noninvasive brain stimulation. Sack received several fellowships in his career, including Fellow of The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012); Fellow of The Young Academy of Europe (2013); Fellow of the German National Academic Foundation (1996); Fellow of the Alzheimer Research Initiative and Fulbright Fellow (1998). He is also Principal Investigator (PI) of the research section “Brain Stimulation and Cognition” at the Maastricht Brain Imaging Centre, considered to be among the world's leading research labs in combining brain stimulation with brain imaging techniques. Prof. Dr. Sack has received several international prices, grants, and awards, enabling him to manage a larger scale international and interdisciplinary research project on the neural network dynamics underlying human cognition in healthy volunteers and to translate these findings into clinical applications for treating various neurological and neuropsychiatric brain disorders. Sack is the founding board member of the Dutch-Flemish Brain Stimulation Foundation, a main driving force behind the recognition and establishment of transcranial brain stimulation as a clinically effective non-pharmacological treatment alternative for neuropsychiatric disorders. As initiator and scientific coordinator of the TMS policlinic at the Maastricht University Medical Center, his engagement has significantly changed the mental health care system in the Netherlands and beyond. Sack is actively involved in organizing rTMS accreditation and quality assurance procedures within the European Society for Brain Stimulation and still acts as founding director of the Academy of Brain Stimulation, an international platform for professional education, certification, and clinical innovation in brain stimulation therapies. The Academy of Brain Stimulation offers the renowned International Clinical TMS Certification Course, one of the most established TMS courses in the world.
