About Alexander Winter

I'm a software developer who believes in the work I commit to and that any job worth doing is worth doing well, from the small details to the big picture. I really enjoy taking spaghetti code and debugging, refactoring, and sanding it into neat, efficient, maintainable code. I'm motivated by projects with visible impact and environments dedicated to ethical social improvement. I'm a graduate of the University of Washington's M.Sc. of Engineering program. My thesis under Andrew Lumsdaine was in high performance computation with funding through the Computer Science department via the Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing and the Department of Energy. It focused on adapting and optimizing a library of tensor behaviors to operate on GPU architecture. I began my graduate studies in fluids for renewable energy in wave energy converters. One of my favorite things is refactoring existing code, filing it down to operate efficiently and cleanly. Prior to graduate school I was a narrative designer in the game industry. I wrote characters and worlds that empowered players to build their own story. My focus was crafting realistic personalities and histories that brought a spark of life to the characters, world, and story of the game. I enjoyed bringing my background in engineering and math to the table in creative writing, infusing the fantasy and sci-fi worlds I created with a touch of real science.
