Background

About Alexandra Baxmeyer

Previously, I was the band director at Hinsdale South High School. There I was nominated twice for the Most Influential Teacher and in 2019, won the student-nominated and selected Teacher of the Year in 2019. I program music, create lesson plans, and utilize diversified teaching strategies in class while building relationships with my students, keeping them engaged, and assessing their progress. Classes I have taught include 9/10 Concert Band, 11/12 Symphonic Band, AP Music Theory, Advanced Composition/Piano, and Beginning Composition/Piano. Aside from the concert bands, I run the pep band, direct pit orchestra, design field charts for and co-direct the marching band, substitute for the jazz band, and help organize and plan performance tours, including Florida and New York. I have also hosted the Sibelius Wind Ensemble from Helsinki, Finland as well as the St. Olaf Band on their way to a culminating performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Additionally, the band commissioned a piece by composer Stephen Mitton and held a concerto competition for select the soloist, and we've worked with several composers, such as Sam Hazo, Carl Holmquist, and Stephen Mitton, and hosted many guest clinicians. Before Hinsdale South, I was the director of bands at Brillion High School and I graduated from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor of Music in instrumental music education. I played in and served as President for the St. Olaf Band, conducted various ensembles at St. Olaf including the St. Olaf Orchestra and a chamber ensemble during my senior seminar, directed the flute choir, have taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels including both rural and urban experience. I student taught at Owatonna Senior High and worked with the 9th grade, Varisity and Concert bands, conducting and implementing lesson plans for all three ensembles.
