About Alexandra Fleming

Driven by a fascination with shaping biology to alleviate human suffering, I am an MS Biology candidate at UCSD specializing in the application of cutting-edge molecular tools. My technical expertise encompasses a wide range of molecular and cell biology techniques including genetic engineering, protein biochemistry, cell-based assays, and computational biology. I possess strong hands-on skills in CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and Cas13a selection, site-directed mutagenesis, various cell culture systems (yeast, mammalian, bacterial), flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy. I complement these wet-lab capabilities with proficiency in bioinformatics tools like AlphaFold3, Foldseek, RaSP, BLAST, and quantitative data analysis. My research experience includes characterizing novel phage proteins (Goslar gp95) using CRISPR-Cas13a selection and quantitative microscopy to understand their role in phage lifecycles, and investigating how specific point mutations in ADE1 affect protein stability and degradation via the Ubiquitin-Proteasome System (UPS). Furthermore, I contributed to understanding the genes governing DNA strand exchange and mismatch correction during homologous recombination in yeast models. Additionally, I gained valuable industry experience at AniCell Biotech, supporting manufacturing workflows and researching extracellular vesicle (EV) concentration methods, linking improved techniques to enhanced cell proliferation. I am eager to apply my molecular biology expertise within the biotechnology or life sciences sector, contributing to impactful research and the development of innovative biological solutions.
