About Alexandra Howell

Growing up in Southeast Louisiana gave me an appreciation for the history and material culture remains of past human activity both locally and abroad. My burgeoning interests were encouraged by weekend visits to local historical homes, museums, and festivals from New Orleans to the Atchafalaya Basin. These visits influenced my education from early childhood. Following a number of years studying the Classical languages, my academic career soon began to concentrate on the discovery and analysis of the material culture of the Ancient Mediterranean. During my undergraduate and graduate career, the challenges and the potential universal applications associated with the techniques, theoretical models, and methodologies became my “siren call” to the archaeology of Aegean Prehistory. Since then my focus has been to incorporate new technologies such as photogrammetry, digital mapping, and GIS analysis in the recording of archaeological material worldwide and the accessibility of that data to the public and professionals alike. These skills have been honed by countless hours of field experience both within the U.S. and the Mediterranean, at projects such as the American School of Classical Studies at Athens’ Excavations at Ancient Corinth and Petras Excavations via the Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study Center of East Crete.
