Background

About Alexandra Miranda

I am a bilingual legal assistant in the Immigration Law Unit at the Legal Aid Society of Rochester. Throughout my undergraduate career at Binghamton University I pursued numerous leadership roles across campus to support the needs of students and community members. I served as a Resident Assistant, Orientation Advisor, TRIO Mentor, and held numerous Executive Board positions throughout my involvement with the Women's Student Union, including President of the organization. Additionally, I have worked collaboratively with community-based organizations such as the Crime Victims Assistance Center as a former Crisis Line Worker and intern. From 2019 to 2021, I was an active member of Dr. Gil-Garcia's research team, analyzing zero-tolerance migration policies to assess the mental and physical health implications of this legislation on the lives of U.S. citizen youth minors. Our research was successfully published in Latino Studies in May 2021. The publication of our research helped bring light to the thousands of mixed-status families negatively impacted by zero-tolerance policies in the U.S. One of my greatest accomplishments as the former President of the Women's Student Union has been spearheading the creation of a Violence, Abuse, Rape Crisis Center (VARCC) at Binghamton University, which has served 200+ students since its opening. I provided direction for addressing sexual violence on campus by creating a framework enlisting programs and campus positions to support survivors. I led workshops and meetings with students, community affiliates, and campus administration to create the VARCC which has been in operation since 2022. My background in advocacy, policy, research, and passion for intersectional feminism informs the work I pursue. I hope to obtain my JD to advocate for legislative change to support the needs of marginalized groups.
