About Alexe Scholtes

I am an MSc student at Western University in the Health and Rehabilitation program, specializing in Health Promotion. My research focuses on understanding the experiences and challenges of eco-distress among young people and exploring strategies to foster resilience. Specifically, my study aims to assess (1) the emotional and psychological impact of eco-distress on youth,(2) the coping mechanisms and resilience-building strategies employed in response to eco-distress, and (3) the role of creative expression in articulating these experiences through the development of a zine. My research is grounded in qualitative methodologies, incorporating arts-based approaches to provide a more comprehensive understanding of eco-distress, recognizing the importance of non-traditional forms of knowledge expression. In addition to my work on eco-distress, I have a strong interest in youth mental health and maternal mental health. My previous research has explored breastfeeding practices, mother-baby connections, and the intersection of mental health and early childhood development. These areas of specialization contribute to my broader understanding of health promotion and mental well-being, particularly in vulnerable populations. By examining the psychological, emotional, and relational aspects of both youth and maternal health, I aim to contribute to strategies that foster resilience and enhance mental health across life stages. This integrated perspective informs my work in promoting health and well-being through both creative and evidence-based approaches.
