Background
About Alexi Freeman
I’ve developed an interdisciplinary artist, fashion and costume design practice over 25 years. My practice emphasises artisanal craftsmanship, sustainability and the intersection of technology and fashion, explored through numerous solo and collaborative projects. My aesthetic is characterised by textural embellishments, architectural silhouettes and a fusion of traditional and modern elements. I experiment with materials, textures and techniques, incorporating prints, hand embellishments, laser cutting and jewellery methods into my artworks. I balance between structure and fluidity, resulting in visually striking and wearable bespoke and ready-to-wear garments. Sustainability, ethical sourcing of materials and responsible production methods are core values of my practice. I create products with longevity, designed to be cherished as heirloom artefacts. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with inspirational creative practitioners such as choreographer Gideon Obarzanek, jeweller Tessa Blazey, architect Aaron Roberts (Edition Office), photographer Jane Burton and Preston Zly (shoemakers). Collaborations that have resulted in thought-provoking garments and installations that blur the boundaries between art, fashion and technology. My work has been presented at major cultural events including Melbourne Fashion Week, NGV Melbourne Design Week, Mona Foma and Good Things Festival (costume for TISM) and I’ve been featured in numerous publications including Matters Journal, Harper's Bazaar and Style Bubble. I’ve also exhibited in numerous cultural centres including Arts Centre Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, Sarah Scout Presents, Craft Victoria, RMIT Gallery and the Australian Design Centre, bridging the gap between art, fashion, jewellery and costume design. I completed a Masters by Research (RMIT, 2021) that deepened my understanding of and commitment to sustainable design. I actively promote awareness and education about ethical fashion practices through institutional lecturing appointments and I contribute discursively to the wider fashion community through public speaking platforms such as MPavilion and freelance design writing. My innovation, commitment to sustainability and multidisciplinary approach have established my creative practice and I pride myself on seamlessly merging traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. With my unique perspective and dedication to responsible fashion practices, I’m passionate about making a positive impact on the Australian art and design landscape.
