Background
About Alfredo Spagna
Dr. Alfredo Spagna investigates the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying human attention and imagination, with a focus on the interplay between frontoparietal networks and high-level visual regions. His research utilizes a variety of methodologies, including behavioral experiments, 3T and 7T fMRI, MEG, sEEG, and mobile EEG. Click on this link for a full list of recent publications. Current Projects include- Testing a heterarchical model of visual mental imagery to understand shared and distinct neural processes between perception and imagination- Examining the role of frontoparietal attentional networks in processing social and non-social stimuli during perception and imagery- Exploring real-world attention using mobile EEG and physiological recordings, with applications for naturalistic environments. Dr. Spagna’s work contributes to debates on competing models of visual mental imagery and advances understanding of disorders involving attention and imagination, including cerebral visual impairment and Dr. Spagna teaches undergraduate courses in cognitive neuroscience, focusing on foundational theories and contemporary research in neural mechanisms underlying cognition and behavior. His courses emphasize hands-on learning, critical thinking, and the application of neuroscience to real-world problems. Recent Courses Taught- Cognitive Neuroscience: A survey of neural mechanisms behind attention, memory, perception, and decision-making- Advanced Topics in Neuroimaging: Examining cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques and their applications in research- Introduction to Neuroscience: Providing students with a foundational understanding of brain and behavior As the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Neuroscience and Behavior Major, Dr. Spagna mentors a diverse group of undergraduate students, helping them navigate academic, research, and career opportunities. He has also supervised graduate and postdoctoral trainees, many of whom have gone on to successful academic and professional roles. Advising Philosophy: Dr. Spagna prioritizes fostering a collaborative and inclusive mentorship environment, ensuring all students have the support they need to thrive.
