Background

About Alisha Mistry

My belief surrounding the importance of health education, the use of exercise and nutrition as a means to improve life and health quality, and my passion to help others through rehabilitation are why I chose to pursue a career in physiotherapy. My bachelor’s program in kinesiology has equipped me with vast skills and knowledge, with emphasis taught around the importance of maintaining and improving one’s triad of health (the physical, mental/psychological, and social wellbeing), through the combination of clinical and hands-on lab components with in-class taught content. I recently completed a Masters in Physiotherapy degree at Brunel University, where I learn new knowledge and skills from various modules and applied them hands-on in various physiotherapy placements (MSK, Neurorehabilitation, Cardiorespiratory, Critical Care, ICU, Amputees). These placements had allowed me to further refine and build upon my communication skills and focus on professional development. Additionally, I have recently completed my training at ProActive Ltd. to become certified in the Level 3 sport massage course. Aside from my academic work, I have a vast and wide range of experience within the field of kinesiology. I began my experience as a player development coach for an under 9 girl’s rep soccer team in Durham FC academy for one season, then transitioned to being a mentor at a non-profit company, where I worked with girls aged 7-16 years at a basketball camp. During my third year of university, I worked with Parkinson’s disease and other motor-cognitive deficient patients as an exercise rehabilitation supervisor in the PD-SafeX program at the MDRC. Before leaving to complete my studies at Brunel University, I worked as a chiropractor and physiotherapist assistant at Apex Physiotherapy and Chiropractic. In these rapidly-changing environments, I gain patients’ trust through engaging in different types of communication such as active listening, asking questions, explaining to them the importance of the treatment/exercise being performed on them, and understanding when their rehab plan/treatment must be adjusted if they are not responding to it. It is my hope to take the skills I've learned throughout the years into clinical settings where I would be able to help individuals live a healthier life through rehabilitation and education about importance of taking care of one's body.
