About Alison Booth

Alison Booth is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Australian National University, and Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London, the IZA Bonn, and the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), Nürnberg. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, and she obtained her PhD from the London School of Economics in 1984. In 2017 she received the Distinguished Fellow Award of the Economic Society of Australia, and in 2019 she was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society. She is also a published novelist. Her fifth novel - in the genre of historical fiction and entitled The Philosopher's Daughters - was published in April 2020, and the most recent, entitled The Painting, in July 2021. Booth was President of the European Association of Labour Economists (EALE) 2006-2008, and became an Honorary Lifetime Member in 2008. She was head of the ANU’s Economics Program 2008-2009, and was Editor-in-chief of Labour Economics from Booth works on labour market and behavioural economics topics. Her book, The Economics of the Trade Union, Cambridge University Press (reprinted 2002) was a Princeton University Economics Book of the Year in 1996. She has held many research grants, including from the Australian Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, the Nuffield Foundation, and the Economic and Social Research Council. Currently she is Associate Editor of the Palgrave Dictionary, and is on editorial boards of the Economic Record, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, and Labour Economics.
