Background
About Alison Meredith
Growing up in Northern Virginia, I was captivated by the native wildlife I would see in my backyard from an early age. When I entered college, I knew I wanted to pursue a career helping animals and the environment, inspiring me to study Conservation Biology. While earning my undergraduate degree, I participated in an internship with a small songbird rehabilitation center — this experience solidified my passion for working hands-on with not only animals in general, but specifically wildlife. I then spent a year at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, VA learning from conservation professionals and participating in endangered species behavior research. After graduating, I pursued zoo animal wellness and behavior, though I quickly discovered my real passions lied in connecting others with their local wildlife and ecosystems. This led me to my current role at a hospital for native wildlife, where I am responsible for the planning and conducting of environmental education programs. I often utilize non-releasable animal ambassadors during these programs to provide examples of the issues that wildlife face and teach others how to be better stewards of the environment. My professional interests are focused in scientific communication, animal training and behavior, and data management and organization. I also have experience in research, lab protocols, and wildlife rehabilitation.
