About Alison Short

Music and the sound environment can have a profound influence on our experiences, behaviours and motivations in everyday life, especially while dealing with a wide range of health issues. My broad clinical and research experiences focus on applied uses of music, particularly professional music therapy, and also broadly on the sound environment in various community applications. My research has found that: • Music can reduce noise stress in the indoor environment of the Emergency Department • Music therapy can assist cardiac patients during rehabilitation and reintegration back into normal life • Music and imagery can support communication in therapeutic practice • Music and music therapy can support fertility treatment (IVF) in an integrated manner • Music therapy is an important interprofessional discipline which can also address cultural and other needs “Music Medicine” is newly emerging area which connects my experiences as both a health services researcher and an internationally recognized music therapist, and I look forward engaging in many more projects in this area in the future.
