About Alistair Cross

I am a field archaeologist with several years of varied, commercial excavation experience. I also have a background in academic archaeology being heavily involved in the instruction of students in all aspects of field archaeology including excavation, survey, building recording and graveyard memorial recording. I have excavated a wide variety of British historic and prehistoric periods, including the Neolithic, Iron Age, Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Post-Medieval, Industrial and early modern. I have also worked outside of the UK in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and in Central America, working as small teams or large projects with local workmen. My excavations have included single person watching briefs and evaluations through to large-scale rural and urban excavations in close contact with contractors, site services and heavy machinery of all types. I have experience of working in confined spaces and at depths exceeding 4 meters, during work on gas, water and sewerage pipelines. I also have experience of working with deeply stratified, multi-phase archaeology in urban areas including water-logged Roman and Medieval horizons. I have worked on human remains of various ages in a variety of settings including planned graveyards and isolated interments. I am also well practiced in both single and multiple context recording methods. I have experience in the use of TSTs for laying-out of sites and site grids, site surveying and the production of pre and post-excavation drawings. I also have used GPS technology to log find and site locations in a variety of situations both small scale and landscape wide. I have been involved in the use of PDA technology on site to produce and maintain digital archives and databases. In post-excavation I have also used a number of database systems to upload and analyse archaeological records. Furthermore I have been responsible for the maintenance and production of accurate and consistent site archives on a number of excavations.
