About Alistair Grant

Alistair Grant studied for both his BA Hons and PhD in Art History at the University of Sussex. Lecturer in Art History, University of SussexAlistair Grant currently teaches Art History and History on the Arts & Humanities Foundation Year. Since 2105, he has helped establish the core interdisciplinary module 'Making History' and has developed its Art History components, especially the study of objects and images, curatorial and archival research. He lectures and leads seminars, provides academic support to students and contributes to Art History and History recruitment. He also organises and leads enhancement and outreach activities, including visits to London galleries and museums.Research Curator, Victoria and Albert Museum, LondonSince 2010, Alistair Grant's research has helped transform the Victoria and Albert Museum’s approach to presenting its unique and extensive collection of copies, especially electrotypes. As an AHRC-funded Research Curator, he helped shape and inform the interpretation and displays in the major refurbishment of the Cast Courts and new Chitra Nirmal Sethia Gallery, which re-opened on 1 December 2018. From 2017-2018, he wrote (with Angus Patterson) the book, The Museum and The Factory: The V&A, Elkington and the Electrical Revolution. It was published by Lund Humphries in association with V&A Publishing on 1 December 2018 (UK & Europe) and 1 April 2019 (USA & Asia).Sculpture and poetryAlistair Grant's curatorial and academic research developed out of a successful career working as an artist, writer and historian for over 20 years. From 2003-2010, his work focused on heritage and environmental commissions in the public realm, mostly Artist Residencies in site-specific contexts. Prior to that, from 1990-2002 he had a traditional studio-based art practice as a poet and sculptor focused on commercial exhibitions, private and public realm commissions of relief sculpture letter designs in cast concrete and letter cutting in stone.
