Background
About Allison Hunter
Allison Hunter, a native of Atlanta, GA, and alumna of South Atlanta High School, currently is a rising junior at Harvard University. Throughout her high school tenure, she has been dedicated to pursuing inequities within education and had the honor of serving as the Chairwoman for the Atlanta Public Schools Student Advisory Council for the Board of Education and Superintendent - catering to the needs of over students within the district. As President of the Young Mobilizers (an Atlanta social mobility organization for inner-city youth), she has worked diligently with her peers to bring more opportunities, resources, exposure, and voice to the youth and their families. Allison created and spearheaded the first homeless initiative, the Protect the Homeless Atlanta Campaign, where her organization rallied to support the displaced members and provided care packages, services, and clothing for over 1200 homeless individuals in the area. She also planned the first annual college tour with the Young Mobilizers, which took 12 Atlanta students on a land-grant university tour to visit colleges in Tennessee, Missouri, and Georgia. Allison Hunter is also credited as the co-creator, filmmaker, and producer of a documentary titled “United: A Voice for the Voiceless'' which focused on the inequities of student education and the community of Atlanta Public Schools. The documentary allowed students to voice their opinions on the atmosphere of their school communities and inspired adults to take the initiative to address these problems. The film validated the inequities of course offerings, concerns about safety, and the desire for change across the student population, which was presented to the Board of Education. Allison created a framework for student-led committees that allow APS students to oversee policies and inequities made by the stakeholders and develop solutions that solve them. The work spearheaded by her and co-producers prompted the Atlanta Public Schools Center for Equity and Social Justice to be opened in 2021, which is tasked with addressing inequality concerns within the APS student community. Her commitment to her community has allowed her to be recognized with a City of Atlanta Proclamation and be awarded a Princeton Prize in Race Relations recipient for the state of Georgia. Allison currently is the Vice President of Harvard's Generational African American Student Association, Emerging Leaders Program Mentor, Civics Teacher for the IOP Program, and serves as the Well-Being Officer for the Harvard Undergraduate Association.
