About Alok Gupta

Alok is a leader in private equity, corporate venture capital, general management and turnarounds. He is an investor in, and mentor to deep tech start-ups. Alok was the Founder & CEO of Axis Private Equity, set up by India’s fourth largest bank by market cap. Axis India Fund held its first closing in April 2008 with commitments of US$150 million from Indian and international institutional investors. He deployed two-thirds of the capital in five investments in renewable energy, water supply and sanitation services, oil and gas services, hospitality and railway EPC sectors. One investment provided a $80M exit at 5.8x in 3 years, and another received a commitment of $15M from IFC at 1.7x in 18 months. Prior to founding Axis PE, he was chairman and CEO of a two million ton integrated steel plant in Europe with employees, and a director of Global Steel, the holding company of the Ispat Group of the Mittal family. Earlier, he was MD at Asia Equity Infrastructure Fund, a US$355M fund set up by Asian Development Bank, AMP, Axa, CDP and Nippon Life. Alok was a director of Hughes Tele.com India and a member of its audit, supervisory and compensation committees. He invested in a number of successful deals in TMT when at COMSAT Corp’s COMSAT International Ventures. As Vice President, Business Development of IWC, a US-based Telco holding company, he was responsible for corporate venturing in Asia. At Okura & Co, now a part of Itochu, he was involved with implementing Nissan Motors’ JV to produce pickup trucks in India. Alok holds an MBA from The Wharton School at the U Penn, and a B. Com (Hons) from Shri Ram College of Commerce of the Delhi University. He was President of Wharton Asian Association and recipient of Wharton Class Fellow award for academic excellence, leadership and community service, National Science Talent Scholarship, Rotary Fellowship, and the Best HR Manager of Bulgaria Award in 2005. He serves on the Advisory Committee of American School of Bombay.
