About Alyssa Comroe

I found my passion for shelter medicine when working at a large, open admission municipal shelter in Miami, FL prior to starting veterinary school. This shelter first opened my eyes to the true plight of homeless animals and helped spark a love for not only individual animal care but population management/epidemiology and forensics as well. I was trained in shelter medicine through the Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Professional certificate program while I was a veterinary student at the University of Florida. I also performed multiple externships while I was a student there and am ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (previously Humane Alliance) trained. While at UF I was also able to complete my Master of Public Health degree. I spent three years working as a Shelter Veterinarian at a large, open admission municipal shelter in Jacksonville, FL. While there I performed sterilization and soft tissue surgeries and dental extractions. I treated medical cases and triaged and treated emergencies. I regularly performed cruelty examinations and have testified in both civil and criminal court. In this position I wrote SOPs and policies for the shelter, was involved in population management and preventing disease spread. I now work in academia as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Shelter Medicine. I instruct fourth year veterinary students during their clinical year on HQHVSN techniques, shelter medicine and shelter management. I teach lectures to first through third year veterinary students on shelter medicine, animal behavior and ethics. I provide consultation services to local shelters and provide continuing education and training to shelter veterinarians and shelter staff. I provide training and mentorship to a shelter medicine intern.
