Background

About Amanda Benoy

I am a Case Law Reporter at Oxford University Press, where I research and analyze key judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and craft headnotes that provide a short legal analysis of the judgments. My professional interests and passions lie in human rights, humanitarian law and child protection, especially in conflict-affected settings. I have over 15 years of experience as a pediatric intensive care nurse. I am currently employed at western and northern Canada's pediatric referral center. For over five years, I was a lead ICU nurse on a pediatric cardiac arrest team, as well as a resource nurse responsible for enhancing the smooth operation of the pediatric ICU. As a two-year member of the transport team covering western and northern Canada, I worked in unstructured environments, consisting of ground ambulance, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopter. My career has necessarily entailed exposure to dynamic high-stakes environments that demand excellence in the life-saving care of children. In 2012, I was present in Libya for the one-year celebrations of the revolution to train local nurses in pediatric post-operative care following open-heart surgery. I similarly traveled to Sudan in 2015 for the same purpose. With the emergence of the pandemic, I transitioned to adult COVID ICU. I responded to the first wave in New York City (Bronx) and subsequently pursued waves of COVID across the United States. Most recently, I provided pediatric trauma training to healthcare providers in Ukraine and neonatal/pediatric resuscitation training in Afghanistan. An unfulfilled need to explore and understand the world beyond my immediate life led me to complete a MSc in development economics. Development led to questions regarding human rights and a desire to understand both in the setting of armed conflict. I consequently completed an ALM in international relations focusing on conflict and cooperation, and an LL.M in international humanitarian law and human rights.
