About Amanda Devine

I am an insightful and inquisitive data analyst with 7+ years experience, a proven ability in data-driven decision making, and a strong background in analytical modeling and biodiversity data who is currently seeking a position as a data scientist or data analyst. I love working with data, I love teaching data skills to others, and I love contributing to the shared knowledge of the world. I am looking to join an organization in a remote position or in an in-person position in the Washington DC metropolitan area. A little more about me: I am a part-time graduate student at Georgia Tech where I am pursuing a Master of Science in Analytics. My coursework includes machine learning algorithms, regression analysis, optimization, data visualization, business analytics, and other forms of analytical modeling. I'm currently working on a project where I am applying ML models on collections of designed objects at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum to find patterns in museum visitor preferences and behavior. I recently wrapped up a seven-year position as a data analyst for the Smithsonian Institution, where I specialized in the analysis of museum collection data, genetic sequence data, and biodiversity data for the Smithsonian Global Genome Initiative. Our program used these analyses to strategically target the collection and acquisition of families of life on Earth, and at the conclusion of our program in 2022, we had 50% of all life preserved on ice for future genomic research. In my spare time, I am a certified Data Carpentry instructor, and I have taught introductory data skill workshops (Python, R, SQL, OpenRefine, and command line) to hundreds of students at the Smithsonian Institution and the National Institutes of Health. I also organized a series of monthly "community chats" focused on different topics in data, with the goal of building a community among local data practitioners. Finally, when I need a break from the computer, I love spending time outdoors. I'm an avid hiker, camper, and backpacker, and I recently completed a challenge to hike 52 hikes in 52 weeks.(Admittedly, it took me 56 weeks, but I'm still proud of my accomplishment!)
