Background
About Amanda Dyck
I started my health care experience in a long term care facility in St. John's Newfoundland where I volunteered as a recreation therapist. From there I had the unique opportunity to work in a hospital in Saltpond, Ghana West Africa. From there, my love of caring for patients grew. I came back to my hometown in Langley British Columbia where I took a Health Care Assistant program where I was on the Deans List of Distinction and earned the Outstanding Achievement award. After graduation I found employment at Langley Residential Care Services, Langley Memorial Hospital, Ridge Meadows Hosptial and the Emerald at Elim Village Assisted Living Facility. From there, I saw many patients not getting care I felt was acceptable, so I wanted more responsibility over my patients which started my career in nursing. I moved to Kelowna British Columbia to attend the University of British Columbia for their Nursing Program. I have had clinical experiences in long term care, thoracic and plastic surgery, medical oncology, medical detox and stroke, mental health, paediatrics, maternity, specialized wound care and general medicine. During school I have worked as a health care assistant in home care, hospice care, at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) and clerking in the cardiac surgery quality improvement sector. In the summer of 2017, I was able to work as an Employed Student Nurse in Cardiac Surgery at KGH and I fell in love with this area of nursing. Since graduating I have been able to work in the cardiac surgical and cardiac medical floors. My skills and knowledge have grown immensely as I take on my new role as an RN. In the past few years, I have been loving my full time position at Kelowna General Hospital and am currently working toward my cardiovascular nurse specialty. I have a passion for cardiovascular health and working with a variety of inpatient clinical concerns including, but not limited to: acute myocardial infarction (NSTEMI / STEMI), atrial fibrillation, heart failure, heart blocks and pacemaker, transaortic valve implantation (pre/post procedure care), pre/post operative bypass and valve surgeries, pericarditis, myocarditis, endocarditis and patients awaiting electrophysiology studies for varied reasons. The most rewarding aspect of my job is patient and family teaching to help prevent future complications and hospital admissions so patients can live a healthy life at home.
